چکیده

Originally named following its identification as a cause of soft rot in onions, Burkholderia cepacia has also been known as Pseudomonas multivorans and Pseudomonas kingae [1,2], and until most recently, as Pseudomonas cepacia [3]. A proposal for the transfer of 7 species of the genus Pseudomonas RNA Homology group II to a new genus Burkholderia with the type-species Burkholderia cepacia has been validated [3]. For the purpose of this review the name B. cepacia will be used. Once considered solely as a phytopathogen, B. cepacia is now recognized as an important pathogen in nosocomial infection and in patients with chronic granulomatous disease and particularly in those with cystic fibrosis (CF). CF is the most common autosomal recessive lethal disease in Caucasian populations with an incidence of approximately 1 in 2500 live births and a carrier

Effects of growth rate and nutrient limitation on virulence factor production in Burkholderia cepacia.

The influence of growth rate and oxygen availability on siderophore, protease, and lipase production in Burkholderia cepacia was assessed for cells grown in a chemostat under iron limitation. Whereas siderophore and protease production increased with growth rate and oxygen yet decreased under oxygen depletion, lipase production demonstrated the opposite trend.

Burkholderia cepacia Complex: Emerging Multihost Pathogens Equipped with a Wide Range of Virulence Factors and Determinants

The Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) comprises at least 17 closely-related species of the beta-proteobacteria subdivision, widely distributed in natural and man-made inhabitats. Bcc bacteria are endowed with an extraordinary metabolic diversity and emerged in the 1980s as life-threatening and difficult-to-treat pathogens among patients suffering from cystic fibrosis. More recently, these bact...

Potential of metabolomics to reveal Burkholderia cepacia complex pathogenesis and antibiotic resistance

The Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) is a collection of closely related, genetically distinct, ecologically diverse species known to cause life-threatening infections in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. By virtue of a flexible genomic structure and diverse metabolic activity, Bcc bacteria employ a wide array of virulence factors for pathogenesis in CF patients and have developed resistance to m...

N-acylhomoserine-lactone-mediated communication between Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia cepacia in mixed biofilms.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia cepacia are capable of forming mixed biofilms in the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients. Both bacteria employ quorum-sensing systems, which rely on N-acylhomoserine lactone (AHL) signal molecules, to co-ordinate expression of virulence factors with the formation of biofilms. As both bacteria utilize the same class of signal molecules the authors investigat...

Functional Analysis of Burkholderia Secretory Virulence Factors

Proteins of B. pseudomallei and B. cepacia involved in virulence and survival were demonstrated using proteomic analysis of stationary phase bacterial culture supernatants. Host response to live B. pseudomallei and B. cepacia and their secretory proteins have provided further insights into bacterial virulence.

The role of mucoidy in virulence of bacteria from the Burkholderia cepacia complex: a systematic proteomic and transcriptomic analysis.

Bacteria of the Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) are associated with severe infection in cystic fibrosis. Recent evidence shows that the mucoid phenotype is common in BCC bacteria; however, during chronic infection, transitions from the mucoid to nonmucoid morphology have been shown to take place. Here we use RNA microarray and proteomic isobaric tagging relative and absolute quantitation tec...
